The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, on a 3-1 vote, yesterday certified the Newhall land West Creek housing development project in Valencia and approved the project going forward. This certification and approval occurs only after the Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission, based on the discovery of perchlorate contamination above the State's Public Health Goal of 6 ppb in area groundwater, delayed the project to request that the developer further study the contamination problem. See my Post of July 9, 2005.
Environmental groups have vigorously opposed the West Creek project, contending that the development should not go forward until remediation of the perchlorate contamination is at least started by Newhall land. It is not clear to me whether these groups' litigation options to halt or delay the project have been exhausted such that the County certification and approval is the final word; however, I'll Post what I learn about this.

Copied from am email I wrote to my supporters this monring: The reason Frank Ferry attacked me in that letter to ABC is because I am very close to unseating his friend Ed Colley from the board. He suspects that an independent-minded wild card like me might make waves on the board. He's right. I am going to work to refocus the board's attention on CURRENT ratepayers. I am also going to be sure to protect CURRENT ratepayers from anything that raises the cost of water without a direct improvement to the quality and reliability of that water. Now, who will help me? 0 0

It will be interesting to see if the Republicans are winllig to continue to take the nuclear approach as they have so far on the State budget. The no new taxes mantra does get a bit tired (even though we would just be extending our current tax levys). What I particularly object to is the barrage of criticism without any concrete alternatives proposed (like specific cuts) or if there are alternatives, they are not practical. I just wish that both parties could work together to reach a concensus rather than acting like kids throwing sand at each other in the sandbox. Cameron Smyth is especially good at this and Buck is getting better with his criticism of Obama on Libya (didn't hear a peep out of him when Bush entered into the disasterous and wasteful Iraq war). In my opinion, this partisianship has adversely effected the country more than some of the tax and spending policies.Regarding Mayo, Seaver sure doesn't seem to like transparancy! He also seems to be stacking the deck. I was surprised Mayo was only a few notches below Holy Cross in the US News ratings. But don't go there if you have a heart attack! Dr. Dorio is correct in his commentary on the insufficient number of OR's versus rooms. The bed to OR ratio for Mayo is 74:1 if there are 3 OR's and 55:1 if there are 4 OR's. UCLA has a 27:1 ratio. Of course it is a bit harder to get into a bed there after surgery 0 0
