U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
EPA Seeks Comment on Preliminary Perchlorate Drinking Water Decision
Agency Plans to Issue a Perchlorate Health Advisory
Contact Information: Enesta Jones, (202) 564-4355 / [email protected]
(Washington, D.C. – Oct. 3, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted extensive review of scientific data related to the health effects of exposure to perchlorate from drinking water and other sources and found that in more than 99 percent of public drinking water systems, perchlorate was not at levels of public health concern. Therefore, based on the Safe Water Drinking Act criteria, the agency determined there is not a "meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction" through a national drinking water regulation.
The agency is seeking comment on its preliminary determination not to regulate perchlorate in drinking water at a national level. EPA will make a final determination for perchlorate after considering information provided in the 30-day public comment period.
While fewer than one percent of the drinking water sources have perchlorate levels above the health reference level, EPA is committed to working with states and localities to ensure public health is protected. States have the right to establish and enforce drinking water standards and EPA encourages state-specific situations to be addressed at the local level. EPA intends to issue a health advisory at the time it issues its final regulatory determination for perchlorate, to assist states with their local response.
A regulatory determination is a formal decision by EPA as to whether it should initiate development of a national primary drinking water regulation for a specific contaminant under the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA has drinking water regulations for more than 90 contaminants. Every five years, EPA develops a Contaminant Candidate List of contaminants to consider for regulation and then makes regulatory determinations on some of the contaminants based on scientific information on health effects, occurrence in drinking water and the opportunity for risk reduction.
A health advisory provides technical guidance to federal, state, and other public health officials on health effects, analytical methods and treatment technologies associated with drinking water contamination. Health advisories also contain guidance values that are concentrations of a contaminant in drinking water that are likely to be without adverse health effects.

Wow, I never knew about this but do know that sodium fidlroue (not the organic kind fluorine) is added to drinking water which can interfere with thyroid function. No wonder synthroid is the #1 prescribed drug in the US!

Having too much water in your system will flush out eltrlcotyees and other needed chemicals, so going on a water diet for 4 days might kill you, or make you feel like absolute cr*p at least. What your doctor was saying is that you either need to drink less water (the opposite of a water diet), or eat more salty foods. If you're worried about your weight and eating, eat some salted nuts every day. Nuts are also good sources of protein.

I fed two of my babies the WAPF hoemamde formula and it was wonderful! I was so happy to have found the recipe and the website. It changed the way I feed my family forever. Unfortunately my first baby was on commercial formula for a year and I cringe whenever I read things like this. But I'm doing my best that I can for him. He actually seems quite healthy in spite of my poor choices! If anyone is on the fence about making your own formula just go ahead and try it! The recipe seems overwhelming at first but once you hunt down all the ingredients and have everything together it's really easy. After a few weeks I probably could have made the stuff in my sleep!

Amongst folks living within sight of our 300 ppb+ perchlorate well, we had individuals with the following bizarre ailments: non-aureus staph in the bone marrow of a 2 year old, a desert fever (coccidiodiomycosis) infection that claimed the lung of a 30 year old Mormon weightlifter, and crippling arthritis and thyroid cancer in a 20 something Air Force navigator student (who is now a Lt. Col. in Air Force Intelligence). The bone marrow infection is strongly suggestive of impairment of pentraxin 3, also a key component of fighting fungal infections like desert fever. The navigator's ailments sound like a severe infection of parvovirus B-19. The defensins of the innate immune system are also sensitive to changes in salinity, and so may also be a perchlorate target (cysteine 5 of the 6 cysteine array common to all defensins?) http://www.perchlorate.org
