Sometimes chemicals designed for safety can themselves become deadly. For example, NBC reports that Saturday morning a chemical used to odorize natural gas, and thus warn people of the presence of the potentially explosive gas, itself leaked at a Dow Chemical plant near Houston, Texas (the plant is about 25 miles away).
The chemical, methyl mercaptan, overpowered 4 workers and killed them. A fifth worker was also overpowered but has survived. The chemical also spread throughout the neighborhood but dissipated before injuring anyone else.
